By ensuring that all the children's basic needs are met we ensure that the right environment is in place so that the real work of building individuals who will contribute to their community can happen.
1. Technology needs are a light when it gets dark so that they can see and a method of obtaining clean potable water.
2. Educational needs are to learn to read and write and to learn the skills of caring (each other and the environment) and community, self esteem and value systems.
3. Nutritional needs are three meals a day of rice and protein.
4. Medical needs are access to basic health care, medication and to learn about hygiene and STD's.
What makes the Newport Foundation great is the simple fact that love, spirituality, guidance, care, understanding and opportunity are being made freely available to a group of kids who sure could benefit. These are the ingredients missing for children who are orphaned and have been fending for themselves.
1. Love
The kids live together and take care of themselves under the supervision of House Parents. They live as a family, do the chores of keeping the home clean and tidy and work in the kitchen and canteen. As they get older, they take on more responsibility becoming involved in budgeting for food and making the rosters for who does what and when. All skills which will have an important place when they start work.
2. Spirituality
Buddhism is the main religion of Cambodia but of course the Buddhist faith is more than a religion. It is a way of life which should pervade everything the kids do. By teaching reverence for the values of Buddhism, the kids learn the skills of not only living with others but living within themselves.
3. Guidance
By following a loose process of "learning by doing", our House Parents and volunteer helpers can use everyday situations to explore strengths and areas for development inside the family. Everything that happens can be a base for the learning experience.

4. Understanding
Because our kids are largely selected randomly from the community, our group has widely differing levels of ability. This gives us the chance to encourage everyone to go above and beyond. It also encourages the stronger in the group to help the less advantaged or less able to achieve more and in the process learn that they too have a role in developing the very best in people. They learn the skills of doing just that.
5. Opportunity
Through close ties to the local community we can provide opportunity. Something for the kids to do – purpose, something for them to hope for – purpose on steroids and do so in an environment surrounded with love. These are surely the base ingredients for being happy and contented!
